ARTH 227 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Pathetic Fallacy, Contortion, Higher Consciousness
Document Summary
A look inside piet mondrian, who lives and works in amsterdam; the one figure who stands in for the context of modernist painting in amsterdam at the time. Piet mondrian"s artworks differs from other abstractions because it makes no claims to stepping outside of the parameters of the works/frame and makes an actual intervention into everyday life. In a sense, we are turning away from the avant-garde, defined as the front lines of an artistic intervention into actual reality, and moving back towards the questions of modernist paintings as an autonomous enterprise. For example, matisse"s paintings held a sense of autonomous enterprise; the kind of painting that was sensuous and affirmative of the viewer"s visual experience regardless of their place in society. Matisse was hoping to carve out autonomous practice that was nonetheless motivating/ responsive to everyday life only insofar as it provided a kind of shelter away from it.
