Mongols learned from khitan and jurchen experience with exploiting chinese agriculturalists. Envoys demanded tribute (and surrender), threatened destruction. Ebrey cites their tactics, weapons, and organization. Quick surrender was rewarded; defiance was ruthlessly punished.
