Document Summary

These enzymes are responsible for esterifying amino acids to their cognate trnas. Each synthetase will couple a single amino acid to its cognate trna(s). The irst stage of the reacion is the same with both types, formaion of an acid anhydride: Amino acid + atp aminoacyl-amp + ppi. The second stage, which is diferent between the 2 classes, is transfer of the carbonyl to the ribose hydroxyl of the terminal nucleoide (a) of the trna: Goal: have the amino acid in the 3" oh of the trna. Recogniion of trnas and amino acids by aminoacyl-trna synthetases. Essenial that the synthase bind only the correct amino acid and the correct trna(s). Error will lead to incorporaion of an incorrect amino acid into polypepide chain. For most cells, there is only 1 synthetase for each amino acid. They use muliple recogniion sites (not only the anicodon) on trnas to accomplish this.
