Document Summary

Biol 155/153: background information: covalent bonds: share pair of electrons ionic bonds: attraction between positive cations and negative anions; exists as lattices. Water: in water, there is a shift of negative charge towards the oxygen atom. Water acts as the solvent in aqueous solution and is good at it due to its dipole nature. There is an electrostatic attraction between hydrogens and oxygens from neighbouring water molecules. Because these form hydrogen bonds, water is cohesive. Furthermore, there is a surface tension between the molecules since each individual molecule can weakly interact with three other water molecules. These break and reform so frequently so water is pulled together evenly into a sphere (the most e cient shape to form). At the interface between phases, however, these form a hemisphere. These also form kind of a thin lm at the interface due to this surface tension.
