Document Summary

In order for scientists to study something as small as a cell, specific tools are required to help visualize them. Thus an understanding of the tools we use to study cells, both their abilities and their limitations, is key to being able to make sense of the data you"re going to be exploring throughout this course. It is for this reason that we start our study of cell biology by exploring the world of microscopy. Electron microscopy allows us to look at the extreme details of organellar structure that we could never hope to see in light microscopy we can look at single atoms with some electron microscopes!! This unit provides basics on light and electron microscopy and introduces microscope techniques that are used throughout the course. As you study the subsequent units there are a number of points at which it would be good to come back and review this material.
