Exchange of o2 and co2 in lungs (respiration) Begins at nasal cavity and ends in the terminal bronchioles within the lungs. Major conducting airway in neck and thorax. Lamina propria : loose ct + malt; elastic lamina (for recoil) at interface of mucosa and submucosa. Dense fibroelastic ct; seromucous glands: exocrine; complex acinar. Contains hyaline cartilage rings (c- shaped) with smooth muscle that connects the ends of c posteriorly. ____________________________: basal (stem) cells, submucosa (middle layer, adventitia (outer layer) Common air and food passage, funnel- shaped with muscular (ie. not cartilaginous) walls. Epithelium: mostly lined by some respiratory epithelium and considerable stratified squamous epithelium due to friction of food bolus passing through. Lamina propria: contains large m. a. l. t aggregates (eg. pharyngeal "tonsils") Submucosa: contains seromucous glands whose ducts empty onto lumenal surface.
