Document Summary

Lesson 1: the components of the urban ecology. "the context of the cities in the 21st century" - ted talk. Most people go to cities as they see opportunities (e. g. economies, business, better living standards) Even developing nations have large cities --> they may not be as well developed but has everything a city needs. Squatters no longer worry about the same things. Developing countries have cities that make use of an informal economy. Informal economy: i. e. food stalls, hawker stalls, pirated videos, mini/temporary schools, essentially outlawed businesses, they naturally progress to a formal economy or toward crime. Cities create value by putting two types of development together --> e. g. slums right next to a high end residential area. Connectivity between the city and country boosts the economy. Cities are very green in the developing world --> e. g. the bangkok train market (when the train comes they temporarily move back their stalls and then move it forward)
