CLST 211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Sophia (Wisdom), Ancient Philosophy, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Last class: what makes ancient philosophy different from modern philosophy. Philosophers trying to live out a life governed by their principles. Cooper places moral weight on conceptual dimension of reasoning and less on spiritual exercises. Cooper builds on the early platonic dialogues (if this division is accurate) Socrates is the paradigmatic philosopher living from his philosophy (29), striving in an "open-ended" way toward a complete knowledge of human values (38) The well-being of the psych (note that this word is often translated "soul") is the only unconditional value. The character, the way socrates is depicted by plato in these works is the focus of cooper. Psych is what is present in an animate being, and not in an inanimate being -- the soul leaves or the breath leaves and has gone somewhere and so dead. Epicurean: particular arrangement of atoms is what is life.
