Fritz perls (1893-1970: developer of gestalt therapy. Influenced by psychoanalysis: was psychoanalyzed by wilhelm reich (influenced his perspectives, moved to south africa before wwii and started the south african institute for. Psychoanalysis: began to deviate from psychoanalysis and developed gestalt theory (holistic view vs. freud"s mechanistic view, moved to new york and was influenced by jacob moreno (psychiatrist, founder of psychodrama) later in life was on vancouver island. Isolated parts meaningful only when seen holistically: people attempt to create gestalts organize data into wholes, our brains complete these gestalts . Gestalt psychotherapy is: existential acknowledgement that people are always in process of becoming, remaking, and rediscovering themselves, phenomenological focus on client"s perception of reality. Increase awareness of what and how the experiences in the moment vs. why they behave: change occurs by expanding awareness. Contact: contact is made by seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and moving with our surroundings and others (reality).
