Remember that gpp is totla amount of energy created, some of this energy is used for respiration, what is left over is npp. No photosynthesis at night, however, respiration still occurs at night. Fire, disease, decomposition, harvesting (i. e. making use of forests for paper/firewood production) Interesting fact: canada is actually considered a source our forests are healthy enough to function as carbon sinks rather than sources (yay) Considerd old great forests as they are balanced in terms of carbon.
