Plot is what happens to characters and how it happens, whereas theme is the portion of your story that reflect the human condition it"s the why of the stor(cid:455). You want to engage readers and lead them to make their own conclusions about the story rather than just give them the theme. Sometimes, even the author does not know what the theme of the piece is.
