Document Summary

Made of hard cardboard so it is meant for babies to munch on. Mostly pictures, maybe a sentence or two. Sometimes there are little lessons/things dropped in for adults to understand but kids won"t. Books are carefully staged and levelled with elementary curriculum. However, as books progress, the vocabulary changes as the reader. Young adult (ya): grows older with the character. Can have dark content, but only because it is a real part of young people"s life. Early 20"s: outgrown ya but not ready to read full on adult literature. Characters are adults and content is incredibly deep. There are certain books that go beyond categories, that the character is young but the reader is not. Midgrade (reader age 8-13) - still taking vocabulary levels into account. The orphan protagonist remains a strong trope. Don"t assume a worldly or sophisticated audience. Few outright works of tragedy for this age group. The adult reader is assumed to be 18 and up.
