Trigger a force or event that disrupts the equilibrium of a slope and initiates mass movement. Undercutting at bottom of slope building roads. Cheaper to repair damage than remove cause altogether. Magnitude: single number, showing scale of event (volume or speed of landslide) After investigation, three paths to mitigate landslides: avoidance move to different area, avoid problem. Convince someone to leave home: prevention do something to make sure landslides don"t occur or don"t occur when people are there. Undercut slope - apply resisting force at the bottom. Anchors: use rock"s strength itself to increase stress perpendicular to the plane of weakness. Remove with drainage: protection armour or strengthen the area that might be affected if landslide happens. Let landslides occur but control where they go. Rock fences catch falling/rolling, rocks and dissipate kinetic energy. Come from oort cloud (farther) and kuiper belt (pluto) Smaller than planets, larger than meteoroids (which are sand - boulder size)
