Platinum was not as popular as gold or silver because of its restricted geological setting. First mention was in 16th century central america where a metal was un-meltable. Recognized by scientific community as element with properties in mid 1700"s. Platinum originates from its alluvial discoveries in the americas by spanish people. They named it platina, meaning little silver, because it resembled silver and threw it back into rivers hoping that it would ripen into gold . It has a resistance to corrosion so was used in scientific and industrial applications in. Restricted supply limited the widespread use of platinum and other pges until the discovery of platinum bearing ores in canada and south africa.
