Differentiate between large scale" and small scale" mining. Large scale - organized, more advanced and developed in a large area. Artisanal - manual labour, simple tools, basic recovery and processing techniques. Small scale - also labour-intensive but with more advanced mechanism and sophisticated processes. Both - dangerous with minimal health and safety, usually illegal via child labour. Describe the difficulties and opportunities presented with respect to artisanal and small scale mining. Describe the diamond development initiative (ddi) and the communities and small scale. Ddi: address problems of unregulated small-scale mining, ie: african artisanal diamond diggers and their families that live and work in absolute poverty. Bring ngos, governments and the private sector together to focus on developing communities in small-scale diamond mining. Goal 3: promote gender equality and empower women.
