Document Summary
Abyssal plains: of earth surface, flattest areas on earth, common in atlantic > indian > pacific, lie b/w continental margin & ocean ridges, up to surface area 900,000 km2. Abyssal hills: < 1 km high, more in the atlantic, parallel to flanks of, nearby oceanic ridges, flat tops usually, areas with volcanic activity, formed in areas with weakness in crust, often called hotspots. Hot spots: volcanic activity areas where lots of islands/volcanoes pop up and move away and another volcano pops up and etc In subtropical regains: corals will grow around the islands, reef building corals have symbiotic relationship, they must be close enough to surface for sunlight. Caldera: collapsed volcano, magma chamber is empty. You can use maps to pinpoint plates and follow the movement over time. Abyssal hill: volcanic formations, don"t come up very high, formed close to spreading centers.
