Document Summary

We simultaneously read films narratively and stylistically (so there is a sense of coherence) How a film is shot ensures that mise en sc ne is never "just itself" Shaky camera movements, as if you"re following the protagonist walking through the street > very fast paced and quick. Presents the filmmaker with choices regarding communication of meaning/how to get that message across to us. There is a big difference in high contrast between light and dark areas. There is a small difference in low contrast (lots of greys/washed out look) The speed of motion is affected by the rate which it is shot (via camera) and the rate it is projected (how it is presented via the projector) It matters what choice the film maker makes (whether or not the shot should be fast/slow) fast/slow) The frame can only show us so much, it is limited and controlled by the film maker.
