FIST 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cinematic Techniques, Voiceover, Silent Film
Document Summary
Silent film was considered it"s own unique art film (something different from reality) Sound entered film with controversy, as sound was considered to undermine the image and remove the artistic style of the film. Dialogue (text and subtext) > the text and the way we interpret/infer what is being said, also serves to tell a story and expresses the feelings/motivations of a character as well. Diction/vocal ticks/vocal intonation (also informs us of their character) Sound effects > sound that is either added or recorded at the time, that is not dialogue and is not music. Acoustic qualities and verisimilitude: e. g. in fargo, you hear the pool balls and the jukebox to create the image of a bar. Music > the film"s soundtrack (including diegetic and non diegetic music) Emotional tenor: e. g. in sad scenes, sad music helps create emotion. Distance audience: makes the audience feels disconnected at a certain point, thus making you conscious and self aware of your surroundings.
