Document Summary
1930s- when sound comes into cinema, end of silent cinema. All the big studios (1916-1928) were already in motion/created the boundaries are much similar as the structure was already based in the studios. Very deliberate choice of when/or not to use sound. 1927 - the jazz singer comes in fundamentally a silent film but with some found. When sound was first invented, a cluster of adaptations to technologies. The genius of the system (as a whole) Movie palaces=huge spectacular movie showings, where they showed themselves. None of the buildings built to include sound, so took a bit to change them to include sound. 1916 - make high class films to appear to middle class, for women to go and for them to go themselves. Nothing like the massiveness/longevity/intricacy of the creations of the studio era. The cinema is an institution in a number of senses, and it developed in a variety of different levels at the same time.
