GEOB 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Alluvium, Sediment Transport, Clastic Rock

47 views2 pages

Document Summary

The study of the erosion, transport, and deposiion of sediment primarily under the inluence of lowing water. Rivers serve to convey water from the surface of the land (already studied under hydrology) Rivers also erode and deposit sediment from the coninents, creaing valleys and loodplains. Rivers are also important components of aquaic habitat, not only for ish resources but also other life forms in wetland habitats. Rivers are also greatly modiiable by humans: dams, dikes, drainage works, gravel extracion, sediment from mining, and forestry aciviies. Thus, study of the luvial system is typically a mulidisciplinary task, involving geomorphologists, engineers, biologists, foresters, etc. Alluvium: unconsolidated clasic material deposited in valley botoms by rivers. Alluvial channel: a river channel cut into alluvium. The river is lowing across materials previously deposited by the river itself. Alluvial channels will periodically adjust their form by eroding or deposiing clasic material as low condiions and sediment supply condiions change.
