GEOG 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Geopolitics, Cash Flow, Oligopoly
Document Summary
Politics and conflict are associated with the geography of demand and supply > this is because oil is one of the most important resources in the world. This is evident since the 1860s (when the commercial exploitation of oil began) : the estimation was that at the current rate of oil usage, there would be none left by 2005. Part of this extension was due to new technology, allowing oil to be extracted from the ocean rather than shallow water (in which it was originally extracted from) > this is called deep sea extraction. New technology has allowed safe usage of deep sea extraction. Examples: north sea, norway (off shore, deep sea sites) were able to do so. Canadian arctic > 100% probability of finding gas spots (although it is a fragile environment) Geography of supply: the middle east"s "shatterbelt" is one of the locations with the most supplies of oil (e. g. saudi arabia)
