September 1st: nazi invaded poland: bombing and destroying, planned to wipe out the indigenous population and culture, replace with germanic. Large battle between polish and germans, protect the polish castle. Nazi believed that all german artwork should return to germany. Lots of paintings were stolen, not even found today. After poland, the louvre (paris) could be the next target for luftwaffe, so the paintings were moved away, under chaotic conditions, but survived. Moved constantly, to stay ahead of the germans. Also prepared to evacuate(4x the art that paris had)
