For life stimulates the growth of other organisms. Live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Dietary susbstances that nurture a selected group of microorganisms living in the gut = fermentable carbs. Favor the growth of beneficial bacteria over harmful bacteria. Properties of an ideal probiotic: restore balance to intestinal flora, anti-microbial effects, stimulate immune function. Counteract disturbances by recognizing the intestine and crowding out bad bacteria.
