Alternative medicine: medical practices not part of national tradition nor integrated into healthcare system, but used by some people. Herbal medicine: plant-derived preparations with therapeutic benefits. Cheaper than normal drugs especially in developing areas. Do not require prescriptions (because of history of use/historical relevance) Generally based on holistic viewpoint (equilibrium between mind & body) Antimicrobial effects (>75% inhibition), increases in prevalence with higher mean annual temperature of the region. Clinical trials support the hypothesis, but not a great amount of evidence (works in adults but not shown to work in children) Prophylactic: compared to placebo, there was a reduction in # of cold episodes among the cohort.
