Document Summary

Compatibilist theory of free will (compatibilism: some actions are free, cd is true, therefore, fw and cd are compatible. Ayer: we need to get clear on what freedom" is properly contrasted with: we think that if you are free, that means your actions are caused. Conditions for fw: self-control condition: my actions are under my control in a manner necessary for moral responsibility ->up to us, choice condition: for any action, i could have chosen otherwise. Ayer: an agent must meet three conditions in order to say that his action was free: his action was voluntary, no one compelled his action, he would have acted otherwise, if he had so chosen (117). Necessary conditions for fw: choice condition: for any action, i could have chosen otherwise. Ayer offers a conditional analysis of the choice condition. Ayer: free will is a matter of being able to do what wants to do.
