Week 17: nutrition for bone health (part 2) Patients who could benefit from calcium and vitamin d. In addition: less mobility, sun exposure, (potentially) poorer diet may make a stronger case for supplementation with calcium and vit d. Calcium supplements 500 mg, if dietary calcium not met. Long term use of steroids (glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis) rapid bone loss. Milk and dairy products in the diet improve the nutritional quality of the diet much more than calcium supplements alone. Examples : milk, cheese, yogurt, orange, tofu, white beans, almonds, sardine/salmon with bones, soy beverage, broccoli. May want to encourage supplementation (if dietary intake is inadequate ) Needs acidic environment for best absorption take with food. Don"t use if on a ppi/h2 antagonist (lower stomach acid)
