Educational attainment is negatively related to opposition to immigration. Education increases ethnic and racial tolerance among groups. Anti-immigration sentiments originate in cultural values relating to national identity, rather than in personal economic circumstances. People oppose immigration because of labour market competition. -individuals will oppose immigration of workers with similar skills. -empirically, effects of immigration on income and unemployment are small people don"t know this. -higher educated people are more likely to support immigration regardless of skill level. -unemployment does not have significant impact on attitudes towards immigration. Individuals" personal economic situations are unrelated to immigration attitudes. State of economy appears to have an effect. Social identity is derived from perceived membership in a relevant social group. To enhance self-image, we increase the status of the in-group. Immigration introduces cultural, ethnic, religious differences between host society and immigrant communities. Citizens negatively stereotype the out-group (immigrants in this case). The greater perceived cultural difference, the greater the hostility.
