POLI 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: H. L. Mencken, Lectern
Document Summary
Ideal (when in reality, it"s a little mob rule-y) Here in canada, our thoughts on citizenship are (typically) closely informed by our thoughts on democracy. But democracy hasn"t always been a stable or even desirable thing! Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the rest that have been tried from time to time. A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49% . Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard. Liberty and democracy are eternal enemies, and every one knows it who has ever given any sober reflection to the matter. *the founding fathers themselves didn"t seem so keen on democracy. As hanson argues, democracy has been popularized and has been transformed from a form of politics once roundly condemned into one to be highly commended .
