POLI 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: The Big Questions, Minoan Civilization, Coniine
Document Summary
Socrates is in prison, calmly awaiting his execution. Annually, the athenians sent a boat and religious delegation to delos to commemorate. Theseus" victory over the minotaur, (and the minoan civilization that had previously dominated the hellenic world) While the mission is underway, no prisoner may be executed. The boat left the day before socrates" trial. When the crito begins, the boat is mere days away. The dialogue is between socrates and his old friend crito on justice and injustice, and what the just response to injustice is. Socrates argues that one cannot respond to injustice with injustice. Crito disagrees and cannot help but wonder why socrates is aiding those who wish to do him harm unjustly. If socrates is executed, it will reflect badly on socrates" friends. Socrates shouldn"t worry about the cost to his friends. Socrates is helping his enemies to act unjustly and do him harm.
