Federalism in canada gives private law to provincial order of government. Quebec based on civil code, rest of canada on common law: supreme court will always have 3 quebec judges. Based on precedence inferior courts follow lead of superior courts. In quebec over 3000 sections in 10 books. Originally from civil code of lower canada (quebec) (1866), updated 1994. Regulation of disputes between private citizens and the state. Two main areas: criminal law and administrative law. Criminal code of canada foundational law: outlines prohibited acts, gives range of punishments, criminal law comes from federal parliament, judges give huge leeway in sentencing, provincial governments in charge of administration of justice and organization of courts.
