Job of government is to get things done. Government is the sole advisor to the crown. Many government responsibilities do not need legislative approval. Bureaucracy has important role in agenda setting and production of legislation. Massive in scale (fed almost half a million employees) Government is responsible for actions of bureaucracy ministerial responsibility. Privy council: citizen appointed to act as advisors to the crown. Up to the prime minister to determine size. Me(cid:373)(cid:271)ers are referred to as (cid:862)mi(cid:374)isters(cid:863) (cid:894)mi(cid:374)ister of health, mi(cid:374)ister of defe(cid:374)se, etc. ) The only way to disagree with cabinet is to resign. This is so we do not give the crown conflicting advice. No formal hierarchy, but in reality prime minister, Finance minister and deputy prime minister most powerful. Is advised by two bodies: pri(cid:373)e mi(cid:374)ister"s office (cid:894)pmo(cid:895) and privy council office. Very large office, managed by a chief of staff, numbers in hundreds. Career civil servants, headed by chief clerk of the privy council.
