Document Summary

Pierre trudeau miffed that there wasn"t a document that protected the rights of canadians. Mostly created to combat the high level of racism that existed. Basic freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of association, every citizen of canada has the right to vote in an election. Does mean courts can say the charter will be interpreted in a somewhat subjective way: equality between males and females, section 28 guarantees all rights equally to males and females. No other clause can be used to override that equality: section 15 is the equality clause. Says every individual is equal under the law and is entitled to equal benefits without discrimination: section 7 says everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the security of the person. Important with respect to the position of women in canadian society. Not to be confused with: don"t be confused with the fifth amendment.
