The plus: regime principles or values are shortcuts to the meaning of the common good. Canada"s regime principles (revised version): equality, liberty, popular rule: general elections, choosing of the party leader. Essence of rights enjoyed by citizens of liberal democracy: protection of the private sphere: public sphere is areas of human activity where governmental regulation of our conduct is necessary to protect the rights of everyone. Popular sovereignty - people hold the ultimate authority different ways of practicing popular rule - degree of commitment toward that value, how popular rule is conducted. Direct democracy - people deciding on popular decisions on a regular basis ie. referendum (binding major, vote of the people that will decide), Plebiscite - non-binding, doesn"t commit the government to implement the decision of the people, gives an idea of what the people want. Initiative - the issue comes through popular movement from the people ie. proposals, signatures, etc.
