Document Summary

Weber deines state as monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force in enforcing its order within a given territorial area . There are distinctions between sovereignty (legal right ruler and distribution of political power) de jure sovereignty vs de facto sovereignty. States could be classiied by how much they intervene in society and economy. Government concentrates on ensuring external and internal security, plays little role in civil society and allows the economic market to operate relatively unhindered. States" duty is to protect individual"s rights to life, liberty and property against any threat, external or internal. Libertarians believe the states" role should be minimal and most are very critical of large state bureaucracies. Object military force, especially when it is deployed to ight overseas. Military should be passive, to defend and not to attack. Do not approve welfare state programs such as universal health care.
