Power could be seen as a zero sum game. In political science, hercules" power is the one needed. Those in power can often set the agenda so it is important to understand how power works. Power is often equates with coercion (do what i say or else ) Manipulation of the preferences of the ruled to relect the interest of the ruler. Associate with elitist thought and marxist critiques of capitalism. Attempt to make the ruler legitimate in the eyes f the ruled. To do this requires an understanding of the basis for authority. How is legitimacy decided: traditional authority, divine right of kings, charismatic authority, persona characteristics of the ruler, associates with authoritarian and totalitarian states, legal-rational authority, based on the stature of the oice within a constitutional structure. Although they can be treated as separate, all governments use both power and authority. In practice, the distinction between both are often blurred.
