Not just this, but also pioneered the strategies that later, everyone would use against lynching. All of the things she did, were later picked up by activists. Born into slavery, able to ascent into middle classs . Became particularly concerned about lynching, after lynching of friends of hers. Did not endorse it; believed arguments for lynching (rape) were applicable, but did not endorse it. Walked a fine line between exploiting this gendered position where she could speak of certain things, but also, used her position to enter political debate . Sexual relations between black men and white women are (often) consensual not always about the sexual threat. And these women often changed their perspective after, because were afraid to be shamed by whites, or lose reputation .
