POLI 361 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Nonviolent Resistance, Ida B. Wells, List Of Civilisations In The Culture Series
Document Summary
Last week: introduced pro lynching, anti lynching movement (thru lens of ida wells) Not explicitly a media strategy, then along the way, find out how media is key role in understanding how, making sure non violent resistance actually works. Nonviolent resistance is a civilian based method used to wage conflict thru social, psychology, economic, and political means w/o the threat or use of violence . Does not mean being passive, or not aggressive in some way you are. Still trying to stir things up, make an affront on something or someone to force them to do something they don"t wanna do . Repertoires: protests, boycotts, labor strikes, non-cooperation, non- violent intervention . Excludes lobbying, election campaigning, legislating (traditional political channels) So think outside ordinary governmental procedures and norms. Principle non-violence: religious/ethical/philosophical commitment to not use violence. Strategic non-violence: use of non-violent means to create disruptions that compel concessions from the opponent (no philosophical commitment needed!)
