Document Summary

General information: most of us will sleep well over 175,000 hours in our lifetimes, researchers used three common tools for the psychophysiological study of sleep, electroencephalogram (eeg): electrical activity at the surface of the scalp. Indicator of the electrical activity in the cerebral cortex and the structures below the cerebral cortex: electrooculogram (eog): eye activity, electromyogram (emg): muscle tension, sleep stages: refer to states on the eeg. Initial: alpha waves (brief bursts 8-12 hz: hypnagogia: accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations, ex. Initial: changes to the eeg itself, no striking changes to the electrooculogram-- the eog-- or the electromyogram- Lecture 4: how much sleep do we need. Studies where people have reduced their sleep over lengthy periods of time. long term sleep reduction studies: people assume a monophasic sleep pattern (they sleep nightly, friedman et al (1977) Tolerance: state of decreased sensitivity to a drug that develops as a result of exposure to it.
