Subjective distress: mental illness produce emotional pain (mood & anxiety) but not always (bipolar disorder) Impairment: interference w/ ppl"s ability to function in everyday life but this doesn"t mean mental illness some are e. g. laziness. Biological dysfunction: some mental illness acquired by experience (phobias) or some are breakdowns/failures of psychological systems. They are strange and behave differently from normal ppl. Belief odd behaviour, hearing voices, talking to oneself was bc evil spirits infested body. Witches were also viewed as having mental illness. Chlorpromazine=medicine to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and other disorders. Deinstitutionalization= releasing hospitalized patients and closing mental hospitals. Misconceptions: psychiatric diagnosis is nothing more than pigeonholing, psychiatric diagnoses are unreliable (nooo), psychiatric diagnoses are invalid (nooo), psychiatric diagnoses stigmatize people (noooo). Diagnose mental disorders (dsm5 provides psychologists list of diagnostic criteria for each mental disorder & decision rules to diagnose the person with condition) Individuals with one diagnosis usually have additional diagnoses.
