Use statistics to deal with and quantify uncertainty. People are terrible at thinking and communicating about uncertainty. Observation you have experienced it as so. Authority somebody tells you it is so. #3: observation is not always even true visual illusions. #4: people don"t always agree on what they are experiencing the dress illusion. Understanding human minds introduces even more problems with pure observation: Science tools: special ways of measuring human thoughts and behaviours that give us precision and eliminate biases. Science rules: special ways of deciding what we observed that minimize the chance of biases and help us formulate theories. Operation definition: a description of a property in concrete, measurable ways. Instrument: anything that can provide us with a measurement of the operational definition. Validity: the instrument actually measures what it purports to measure. Reliability: the instrument gives similar measurements each time it is used to measure the same thing.
