Document Summary
Social categorization: us versus them: may be a evolutionary adaptation for disease avoidance. Built up immunity for that specific area. Adaptive to see groups as oh they might bring disease. In-group bias: tendency to evaluate in-group members more positively than out-group members. Students randomly assigned to group w or group x. Choice 1 - keep and give to other group. Choice 2 - keep and give to other group. Most people choose choice one so that the other group gets less. Stronger identification with a group - stronger in-group bias. Stronger identification with ingroup, stronger out-group discrimination. Lemyre & smith, 1984: had the choice to take away credits from people, those who did discriminate/take away credits from people had higher self esteem. Bc of multiculturalism and less overt discrimination. Gave teachers report cards with grades on it. The grades are the same for each group.
