Psychology 102: Developmental, Social, Personality, and Clinical Psychology Lecture #15 - March 12, 2013  The more you value love, the more life satisfaction on has Happiness and Money:  Spending on self vs. others  People who spend more on others are happier  People who spend more on others are happier in the future  People randomly assigned to spend $5 on others (rather than themselves) are happier afterwards Leading Cause of Death in Canada:  Half attributed to people's behaviour  Effects of stress related health-risk behaviours o Smoking o Alcoholism o Unprotected sex o Insufficient exercise o Drugs o Poor nutrition  Prolonged stress Behavioural Medicine:  Integrates behavioural knowledge with medical knowledge  Goals: o Life expectancy o Reduce suffering o Quality of life Health Psychology:  Psychological contribution to behavioural medicine  Average medical school has 30 psychologists on faculty  Compared to an average of 2 in the 1950's  Emotion and personality  Attitudes and behaviours  Perceptions of situations  Reduce and control stress Stress:  Occurs in any circumstance (real or perceived that threatens a person's well-being)  Process by which we appraise and cope with environmental threats and challenges  Can be beneficial in small doses, or harmful if intense or prolonged The Stress Response: Psychology 102: Developmental, Social, Personality, and Clinical Psychology  Fight or flight  Outpouring of epinephrine and norepinephrine from the inner adrenal glands  Increasing heart and respiration rates  Mobilizing sugar and fat  Dulling pain General Adaptation Syndrome:  Three phase stress response 1. Alarm reaction (mobilize resources) 2. Resistance (cope with stressor) 3.
