Alfred binet initially studied intelligence using craniotomy (study of skull) as a means of determining intelligence > in 1904, the french ministry asked binet to come up with some ways to identify kids who are falling behind in school. -> so he created a test that had a large number of tasks, and wanted to test a wide variety of topic. It was a long test with different components. In 1908, published his first version of the iq test -> his worry was that if you use the test and every single student would come up with a number, and teachers would give special treatment to the smart kids, and less to non smart kids Therefore the struggling kids struggle even more: he emphasized that if a child was behind their age, then they should receive special treatment. The intelligence quotient = mental age/chronological age *100
