Document Summary

Absorption distribution (passage through bloodstream) biotransformation (drug. Liberation: the drug molecules separating from the base or other sugars converted into other molecules) elimination. Intravenous drugs affect us faster, but fades quickest; per os lasts the longest but slowest. Drugs will be absorbed in an environment that has a similar ph (ph=7, neutral; below is acidic, above is basic) Bioavailability: the drugs availability to reach the site of action (brain) First-pass metabolism: drug being broken down by enzymes or metabolites. Prodrugs: inactive drugs with no psychoactive effects, they get metabolized and converted into a psychoactive chemical once it reaches it brain. Nonspecific binding: drugs binding to things in your body before reaching the brain; prevents them from reaching the brain = less bioavailability. Allosteric modulator: unlike agonist or antagonist, has no positive or negative effect in itself. Tolerance: adapting to the regular presence of the drug; means you require more of the drug to acquire the same effect.
