BPS 321 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Benzodiazepine, Vascular Smooth Muscle, Prodrug
Document Summary
Dose response curve result of many biological processes. Processes classified into groups: pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Pharmacokinetics: all the things a body does to a drug before it reaches the site it needs to (absorbing, pharmacology travelling with receptors, ect. ) Main site for drug metabolism happens in the liver. Main site for drug elimination is through urine (or intestinal excretion, gallbladder bile ducts, sweat glands) Anesthetics are inhaled, as well as expired out of the lungs. Absorption is the entry of drugs into bloodstream, usually by crossing cellular barriers. Distribution is the delivery to various sites within body, usually via bloodstream. Metabolism is the alteration (biotransformation) of drug molecules into metabolites, usually by drug metabolizing enzymes in liver. Elimination is the exit of parent drug molecules from body, usually in urine by kidneys. To understand the rates of the above (adme), we measure the concentration of drugs in the bloodstream after oral administration.
