Document Summary

Ethanol vs. isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) and methanol (anti-freeze) 1 small bottle of isopropanol = 24 beers all at once. Methanol is dangerous bc it gets broken down into toxic enzymes - formic acid and formate (shuts down your mitochondria aka organ failure) Percentage alcohol (abv) - alcohol in grams per 100 ml. Double the abv, ex 50 proof = 25 abv. Grains and sugar + yeast = ethanol. Can only produce things around 15% abv. Ethanol is both water and lipid soluble. Absorption: gastrointestinal tract, or any membrane will absorb because it"s so soluble. Creates a vitamin b deficiency because you don"t eat as much when you"re a heavy drinker. The longer you can keep alcohol in your stomach before gastrointestinal the more it will be broken down; if you"re on an empty stomach it will go to your gastrointestinal tract much faster = drunker. Zero-order kinetics: enzymes are working away, 10-14 ml of alcohol is broken down per hour.
