PSYC 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Agraphia, Critical Role, Anomic Aphasia
Document Summary
Two main brain regions responsible: broca"s and wernicke"s. Language is a combination of sounds for communication and has many components. It doesn"t have to be sound based (i. e. als is a language: syntax is a human specific thing and it is the rules of grammar. Broca"s area: doctor named broca who had a severe stroke and after could only say the word. Wernicke"s area: another doctor with a patient who had an aphasia. If you have damage to superior temporal gyrus you have problems with language. The arcuate fasciculus is a series of white matter tracts that travel between the two areas (broca"s and wernicke"s) Imagined in the past as a unidirectional model: but now we realize there"s communication between both areas. Distinct areas become active depending on the type of task you preform (i. e. selecting different nouns) Other than identifying things based on loss of function you can also find our information based on gain of function.
