PSYC 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Central Nervous System, Somatic Nervous System, Peripheral Nervous System
Document Summary
Know the major divisions of the nervous system. Somatic nervous system (sns): interacts with the external environment. Afferent nerves carry sensory signals in from skin, skeletal muscles, joints, eyes, ears, etc. , into the cns. Efferent nerves that carry motor signals from the cns out to skeletal muscles. Autonomic nervous system (ans): participates in regulation of internal environment. Afferent nerves carry sensory signals from internal organs to cns. Efferent nerves that carry motor signals from the cns to internal organs. Sympathetic ns: sympathetic nerves mobilize energy resources in threatening situations (fight or flight); usually via adrenal glands. Parasympathetic ns: parasympathetic nerves act to conserve energy and create a balance.
