Document Summary

2015/11/2 lecture 22: group processes group definition and process. A collection of three or more people who interact with each other and are interdependent, in the sense that their needs and goals cause them to rely on each other. Being in a group is very crucial to survival. Helped us fulfill basic needs (e. g. hurt, grow food, care for children. ) Other people can be an important source of information. Groups are also an important part of our identity, helping us define who we are, and serve as a source of social norms, the explicit or implicit defining what is acceptable behavior. Entiativity (group cohesiveness ) = extent to which a group is perceived as being a coherent entity. Lots of interactions with each other: group membership is important to members, members share common goals and outcomes, members are similar to each other in important ways. Importantly, entiativity should be constructed as continuum.
