PSYC 319 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Breech Birth, Randomized Experiment, Random Assignment
Document Summary
Cephalic position = head down, head comes first, easiest position for delivery. Breech position = bottom down, feet come first, more difficult to delivery. Midwife can use med to change the position, but not all the time. Doctors aren"t as experienced to perform a breech delivery through vaginas. Sign up before birth, some at time of birth. Randomly assigned to either planned c-section or planned vaginal delivery. Randomized trial doesn"t always go the way you wanted. The reason of random assignment is to eliminate difference between different samples. False negative is better than false positive. Rather to find no result than finding one that"s wrong. At birth, greater risk of perinatal (before birth)/neonatal(after birth) death for vaginal delivery. 16/2000 babies die: 3 from c-section; 13 from vaginal. Lead to decrease in hospital performing and training vaginal births for breech delivery. But only 3/13 die due to difficult vaginal delivery. Views regarding childbirth; ease of caring for infant.
